35-Year-Old Water Pumping Station Restored to Improve Water Supply for Karachi Communities

Karachi: Mayor Karachi and Chairman Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) Barrister Murtaza Wahab has inaugurated the restored Mir Muhammad Baloch Water Pumping Station after 35 years, marking a significant step towards strengthening Karachi’s water infrastructure.

The rehabilitation of the pumping station is expected to improve water supply services for more than 300,000 residents of Saddar Town, Lyari Town, and the Old City areas while addressing long-standing water shortages.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by KWSC Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, Chief Operating Officer Engineer Asadullah Khan, Chief Engineer Aftab Alam Chandio, senior officials, and elected representatives.

According to officials, the restored facility will benefit several localities, including Ranchore Line, Kharadar, Mithadar, Jodia Bazaar, Bombay Bazaar, Bhimpura, SIUT, Civil Hospital, and various union councils of Saddar Town.

Officials briefed that the project was prioritised after Mayor Karachi visited the area and inspected the non-functional pumping station around three months ago. Following his directions, KWSC initiated comprehensive rehabilitation measures.

The restoration work included civil structure repairs, complete overhauling of pumping machinery, rewinding of three 125-horsepower electric motors, installation of low-tension cables, laying of a 500-running-foot-long 12-inch diameter pipeline, provision of modern electric panels, and securing a permanent electricity connection.

The project was completed at a total cost of Rs30.5 million, including payments to K-Electric.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab said the Mir Muhammad Baloch Water Pumping Station was established in 1991 but remained inactive for over three decades due to the absence of a permanent electricity connection.

He said the restoration would help resolve long-standing water supply issues in the Old City and adjoining areas.

The mayor stated that providing essential services to citizens is the responsibility of all institutions and emphasised improved coordination among departments for development projects.

He announced that work on Garden Pumping Station would begin following the completion of the Mir Muhammad Baloch project, while new pumping stations were also being developed in Manghopir and Mominabad.

Barrister Wahab said an additional 10 million gallons per day of water would be supplied to Lyari through the K-III line within two months, while long-standing water issues in Gulshan-e-Hadeed and Steel Town had also been resolved.

He added that KWSC was continuing efforts to modernise Karachi’s water supply system, rehabilitate ageing infrastructure, and provide improved municipal services to citizens.
